Vic Daggs II: Why Personal Growth is the Foundation of Universal Sound
The Black Media Matter Studio was full of brotherly love when Seattle rapper and multi-faceted artist Vic Daggs II joined his long-time friend Curtis Delgardo II on Almost The Weekend! last week. The pair dove into Daggs’ motivation behind his artistry in music, audio engineering, and fashion design, and his focus on capturing authentic moments of creative excellence.
From a young age, Daggs’ drive excelled in sports, which he credits for instilling a strong work ethic and character. However, a desire for creative control eventually led him to leave sports for the studio.
"I realized…'I want to do something that I'm in control of the narrative,'" he said. This shift was fueled by the same dedication he learned on the field: a commitment to being great.

Beyond writing bars, Daggs taught himself how to engineer and produce. This necessity, born out of limited resources, interconnected his understanding of all facets of his art.
"When your resources are limited, you have to think harder on how to capture the same thing and make it feel authentic,” he said.
This hands-on approach allowed him to cultivate and refine his sound. "Now I sound exactly how I sound in my head,” he said, stressing the importance of preparation in the industry and explaining that he works to be consistent and prepared. “So when your number is called, you're ready."

Daggs credited the Macklemore residency program as a foundational experience for his success, using the provided stipend to buy his first set of recording equipment. This early investment eventually led to a spot on the Van’s Warped Tour for three months, which exposed him to the professional culture, allowing him to soak up knowledge from invaluable resources, he said.
After landing a feature on Macklemore’s 2023 album “BEN,” Daggs opened for the prolific Seattle rapper at Climate Pledge Arena that summer."Climate Pledge Arena…you can't beat that,” he said. “It's everything a kid... wants to do."
When describing his music, Daggs offers a poetic definition. "My sound I think is little time capsules of how Vic feels when he feels,” he said, emphasizing that personal growth is the essential foundation for artistic success. "If you don't grow as a person, you're not going to grow in any other aspect."
This growth fuels his detailed approach to storytelling, he explained, where his focus on connecting people through art is rooted in a strong belief that music is a universal language.
