Sonic Guild grants push local artists like Seattle band La Fonda toward their dreams

When Valerie and Veronica Topacio, sisters and the lead singers of Seattle Band La Fonda, received a call from Ben London telling them they’d been named as one of the recipients of a 2022 Sonic Guild grant, they were speechless.

“I literally couldn't speak. I just told Valerie, like ‘I can't speak - you speak for me because I cannot physically speak’,” Veronica said. “My heart was racing. It was pounding. People don't know really what it takes behind closed doors to prioritize your art.

Washington State’s Black History: Dr. William Earnest Lacy, Jr.

William E. Lacy, Jr. was born in Birmingham, AL in 1919 and passed away in Seattle, WA in 2007. Lacy was a graduate of Talladega College, Alabama’s oldest private Black college where he studied Chemistry and Mathematics. During WWII he distinguished himself among troops of the all-Black 92nd Infantry Division. He returned home to marry wife, Helen and moved to Seattle after completing his medical training.

During the Mariners’ Pre-Spring Training Media Event the organization announced that in partnership with EL1, they were launching the “Mariners Training Center.” Spanning five of EL1’s facilities across the state of Washington, the goal of this collaboration is to expand equitable access and participation in youth baseball and softball.

Washington State’s Black History: Dave Mann

Dave Mann (1933-2018) was a professional baseball player who played 12 seasons from 1952-1963. He was best known for his speed at stealing bases. Mann would achieve 217 stolen bases in his career. Building on his baseball success with various teams, Mann would often recount his time with the Miami Marlins where he roomed with Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige. An aging Paige had much to share with Mann before Dave headed west to play for the Seattle Rainiers. He would remain with the Rainiers until retiring in the mid-1960s.

Kraken dismantle Bluejackets in 3-1 victory to head into All-Star break on a high note 

In their final game before the All-Star break, the Seattle Kraken were able to handily dismantle the Columbus Blue Jackets. Resulting in a 3-1 score, Seattle hardly ever had resistance to manage as the Kraken got scoring contributions from Morgan Geekie, Alex Wennberg, and Eeli Tolvanen while Philipp Grubauer was again solid in net.
