Joining host Trae Holiday on The Day With Trae is Shamso Issak, the Founder and Executive Director of Living Well Kent. This organization is dedicated to empowering Kent and South King County residents, focusing on refugees and immigrants from non-English speaking backgrounds by equipping them with the essential tools to navigate and thrive within their community. Drawing from her experiences as an immigrant from Somalia, Issak's journey has been a foundation builder for her organization.
Kiesha Garrison Talks Building Connections and Opportunities with Hey, Black Seattle!
On Thursday, February 28, Kiesha Garrison, the CEO and founder of Hey, Black Seattle!, stopped by The Day with Trae for a conversation about her site with host Trae Holiday. Originally from Louisiana, Garrison brings 15 years of experience in media publishing and technology to her platform. Having previously worked as the Microsoft AI platform engineering team's Director of Culture and Communications, she witnessed firsthand how large companies utilize technology to create innovative solutions to address challenges across various sectors. Using her skills and expertise, she transitioned her expertise into Hey, Black Seattle! and developed a medium focused on forging relationships throughout Seattle's Black community.
Shutout in Seattle: Philipp Grubauer and the Kraken hold the Penguins scoreless in tight 2-0 victory
As their six-game homestand is coming to a close, the Seattle Kraken pulled out a tight 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins behind a shutout performance by goaltender Philipp Grubauer and chaotic goals in front of net by Oliver Bjorkstrand and Alex Wennberg.

Young Black Homeowners and the African American Leadership Forum Host Second Black Equity Ball
On Friday, February 23, Young Black Homeowners (YBH), partnering with the African American Leadership Forum (AALFWA), hosted the second Black Equity Ball. This red-carpet affair was created to honor the journey of current and future black homeowners as they embark on the experience of gaining first-time homeownership. The event showcased DJing, musical performances, vendors, a champagne toast, and a dinner catered by That Brown Girl Cooks! that set the tone for the evening.

Last month, a delegation of eight journalists and media professionals from Gabon traveled to convene at Converge's Black Media Matters Studio to engage in an insightful discussion centered around harnessing the power of digital media and utilizing it as a tool that creates impactful reporting within local communities.
Africatown Community Land Trust Previews the State of Africatown 2024 on The Day With Trae
Africatown Community Land Trust will host its annual State of Africatown on March 2. The event has been running for the last decade, serving as a platform for community voices to discuss issues facing Seattle's Central District. How To Watch “Sankofa Theater Inscape Finale” Nationwide On The FOX Local App
Tonight at 7pm PST on FOX 13 Seattle and FOX 13 +, Back2Besa host Besa Gordon presents a new film telling the story of one of Seattle’s most precious Black cultural spaces. Sankofa Theater: Inscape Finale which goes inside the journey of the Sankofa Theater, from its mission to the fight to keep the Black-owned space alive. The film features founder Teme Wokoma alongside many of those who worked hard to create a safe and open space for Black artists in the city. Converge Media’s latest film - Sankofa Theater: Inscape Finale - is set to air commercial free in primetime this Tuesday, February 27th at 7 pm on FOX 13 Seattle and nationwide on the FOX Local app. Produced by Back2Besa host Besa Gordon, the film takes a look at the impact of Seattle’s Sankofa Theater and the fight to save what has become an important space for Seattle’s Black artists.
Focus On Film: The Swingman Classic
This week, we focus on a film which highlighted Black joy and baseball in the Emerald City. The first ever HBCU Swingman Classic came to T-Mobile Park as part of MLB All-Star Weekend, featuring the best HBCU ballplayers from around the country competing in an exhibition game. Hosted by Ken Griffey Jr., it was a night to remember. Our crew was there to document the evening and community celebration that it brought.

Besa Gordon Highlights Seattle’s Sankofa Theater In New Film and Primetime TV Special
Seattle’s Black Arts and Culture scene took a hit with the closing of the Sankofa Theater, a space created for Black artists and storytellers to share their talents with the world in Seattle’s Central District. The Theater, which was located at the Inscape Arts Building, was forced to close in September due to a lack of funding and a push from other tenants. While owner Teme Wokoma looks for a new space, Back2Besa host Besa Gordon took a deep dive into the remarkable story behind the theater and those who served as it’s driving forces.

This Wednesday on The Day With Trae, host Trae Holiday welcomed director and co-founder of Acts on Stage Theatre, Isiah Anderson Jr., alongside Moses Masith, one of the stars in Anderson's production, "King X: The Meeting." Unveiling the Colors of Liberation: The History of the Black Liberation Flag
Written by Besa Gordon: Last week, Seattle made history by hoisting the Black Liberation flag over City Hall for the first time. This was a momentous occasion to honor Black History Month and celebrate the strength, resilience, and enduring spirit of Seattle’s Black community. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Seattle City Councilmembers Joy Hollingsworth and Rob Saka, Esq., and King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay, along with community members, came together to celebrate this historic moment. It was great to see leaders and community members come together to recognize and uplift the contributions of the Black community. After attending this historic event, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the Black Liberation Flag and it’s meaning for those that may not be fully familiar with it.
