‘Paintbrush Legacy:’ Artist Jonarra Swanson Debuts New Solo Show in Pioneer Square

Artist, entrepreneur, and mother Jonarra Swanson recently unveiled her first solo exhibition in years, titled "Paintbrush Legacy," at Gallery AXIS in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Converge creative director and co-founder Erik Kalligraphy took his camera to the gallery and masterfully documented the new collection of Swanson’s never-before-seen pieces.

For Swanson, “Paintbrush Legacy” serves as a metaphor for taking control of one's life. Her work frequently depicts characters navigating canvases while holding paintbrushes or buckets of paint, symbolizing their inherent ability to chart their own course. These figures are intentionally guided by the wisdom of ancestral leaders, with many pieces incorporating quotes from historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and Langston Hughes.

The work is intensely personal, reflecting Swanson’s journey from a period of intense depression when she felt she was "destined for nothing." Her decision to begin painting was an escape that eventually transformed her life. Beyond personal empowerment, Swanson emphasized the importance of representation, believing that without the stories of marginalized communities, the world misses out on their magic.

Check out “Paintbrush Legacy” tonight, Thursday, March 5, at the First Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square at Gallery AXIS. The Art Walk is a free and self-guided neighborhood event on the First Thursday of every month showcasing some of Seattle’s brightest artists and businesses.
