Soul on the Water: Celebrating Black Life and Excellence at Pier 62
Seattle's Pier 62 transformed into a cultural landmark for "Soul on the Water” in the summer of 2025, a festival dedicated to celebrating Black life, history, and excellence. Hosted by the Africatown Community Land Trust in partnership with the Friends of Waterfront Park, the event served as a powerful declaration of presence, ensuring that Black people remain a visible, integral part of the city's waterfront narrative.
For many attendees, the day felt like a long-awaited homecoming, as generations gathered to reconnect with their roots and celebrate in an environment intentionally crafted with them in mind. From live performances by national and local talents to interactive art sessions and showcases by Black-owned businesses, the festival fostered a unique space where laughter and connection thrived, effectively bridging the past and present for residents from across the region.
Looking toward the future, "Soul on the Water" stands as a vital reminder that public spaces are defined by the people, culture, and stories they hold. As the waterfront continues to evolve, the festival remains a key initiative in cementing a legacy of cultural appreciation, mutual support, and unapologetic joy for years to come.
