Celebrating Community and Culture: Yolanda Galery on the Upcoming Black Makers & Creatives Event
Visual artist Yolanda Galery recently joined host Trae Holiday on “The Day With Trae” to discuss her journey as a full-time creative and the upcoming fourth annual Black Makers & Creatives event. The celebration of culture and community is scheduled for Sunday, March 1st at the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington in Renton.
Artistry Born from Resilience
Galery’s path to becoming a full-time artist began as a way to find a foundation during the challenges of the pandemic. Already dealing with the complexities of a new marriage, a newborn, and a child graduating elementary school, she turned to painting as a form of alleviation.
"I picked up paints in 2020 as an escape from…everything that was going on," she said. "I needed to ground myself with something that I can control and something that I can just relieve some stress with."
Her work primarily focuses on the beauty of Black women and natural hair, though she is currently exploring personal narratives that put her own vulnerability on full display. "It's like a musician... their lyrics can be so personal and those songs can be so deep. It's similar with visual art," she said.
A Love Letter to the Culture
The upcoming Black Makers & Creatives event is designed as an all-ages marketplace and celebration. This year’s theme, "I Choose You," serves as a "love letter to Black music, stories, and experience,” Galery, a featured artist, said.
Attendees can expect a diverse array of offerings, including six Black fashion designers and various musical performers, a ballroom space featuring Black artists, artisans, and makers, and activities and food suitable for all ages.
Investing in the Next Generation
A central component of the event is its commitment to the local community. Tickets are priced at $10, with all proceeds benefiting the Family First Community Center in Renton. Founded by former Seattle Seahawk Doug Baldwin, the center provides children’s workshops, youth camps, and family-centered activities.
"You're not only supporting artists and artisans, you're supporting the community directly and you're having a good time," she said.
