From Parents for Student Success to Red Barn Ranch: Dawn Mason’s Unwavering Commitment to Youth

On a recent episode of "The Day With Trae," host Trae Holiday welcomed former Washington State Representative for District 37 Dawn Mason to discuss Mason’s decades of advocacy and her unwavering commitment to the success of the next generation.

A Foundation Built on Advocacy

Mason’s journey in education advocacy began nearly 40 years ago when she founded Parents for Student Success, an organization dedicated to supporting parents of school age children in ways that provide them with the information and skills needed to effectively manage their child’s K–12 education.

The inspiration came after Mason’s daughter was suspended from middle school. After a conversation with the principal, Mason realized that education shouldn't necessarily depend on a child’s circumstance.

"You can't give and withhold education based on the station of life a child is born into,” she said. “The platform and foundation for me is that what the privileged and entitled guarantee their children, we will ensure all children.”

Addressing the Systemic Challenge

Mason remains deeply concerned with the current state of traditional public education, noting that the system often fails a significant percentage of its students. However, she said data shows that many children are not reading at grade level by the third grade, a critical marker for future success.

One of Mason’s most significant contributions is her dedication to mentorship and "passing the baton" to the next generation. She believes it is the duty of an elder to share wisdom and open doors.

Looking Forward: Red Barn Ranch and More

Mason is currently involved in several initiatives, including the Red Barn Ranch in Auburn, a project designed to provide nature-based programs for youth. By putting children on horses and providing them with tools and community, she believes they can be kept on a positive path.

"Do not go to the strong for justice while you're weak, but come together with people of like minds and accomplish something,” she said.
