Micaiah Jeffrey: Embracing Identity and Advocating for Change on "We Live in Color"
Micaiah “Pluto” Jeffrey, a Seattle-born dancer and choreographer, joined host Deaunte Damper for a special Pride edition of “We Live In Color” last June to discuss their journey in self-discovery and creating community. Jeffrey shared about finding his niche at a young age, his artistic endeavors, and impactful advocacy work.
Jeffrey, a co-founder of the dance group Alignment Crew, shared profound insights into the significance of Pride Month.
"Pride Month has always been a time where I get to be fully myself," Jeffrey said, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and showing up as his queer and trans self, regardless of people's opinions.
On his upbringing, Jeffrey said that dance played a crucial role in shaping his identity. Growing up with a pastor father, he found solace and expression in dance, particularly with the group Kutt'N'Up, led by Emmy Award-winning choreographer Koach Giggz.
This creative outlet provided crucial space for Jeffrey’s self-discovery and connection with peers who shared similar mindsets and experiences in a world geared against them. Jeffrey underscored the importance of full commitment in artistic pursuits—a lesson learned from Kutt‘N’Up that has since applied to all aspects of life.
Jeffrey also candidly discussed the complexities of being a pastor's kid and the journey of coming out as trans. He said that while his mother supported him, the path toward acceptance was difficult. Jeffrey's father initially struggled with the realities of medical transition but came to a place of understanding and support two years later.
Beyond personal experiences, Jeffrey's commitment to activism shone brightly. He expressed a passion for researching diverse topics and sharing them through writing and media, covering everything from local artists to critical issues affecting Seattle like substance use and mental health.
In a poignant call to action, Jeffrey urged the community to be more gracious and listen more attentively to one another, especially to young people and queer individuals. His journey showcases the transformative power of art, authenticity, and unwavering advocacy, offering a ray of hope for individuals striving to live fully and colorfully.
