CEO of the National Charter Collaborative Naomi Shelton and Principal of the Rainier Valley Leadership Academy David Watson shared their thoughts on the way the education system has changed and how it effects Brown and Black children in the community.

On January 28th, 2023, Elijah L. Lewis hosted an event planning session at his company Ethereal Vision’s creative hub, the Sankofa Theater. His mission through the company was to create a thriving ecosystem of individuals and to create space for their visions to be realized.

Garfield Super Block is a campus located in the heart of Seattle’s Central District containing Garfield High School, Quincy Jones Performing Arts Center, Garfield Teen Life Center, Medgar Evers Pool, Garfield Community Center, as well as the ballfields, tennis courts, and a playground. Adjacent to GSB is Nova High School, whose students frequently use the park.

The Seattle Mariners first homestand of the year didn’t go the way that many hoped it would start, but there were positives to take from the teams 2-5 record over the first 7 games of the season. Here’s a brief look at what happened in those first two series, against Cleveland and Los Angeles (AL)

The Seattle Mariners ended their Opening homestand with a loss to the Los Angeles Angels as their comeback attempt fell a run short. The Mariners dropped the series to the Angels, and will now head out on the road for a 6-game trip

They finally did it, the Seattle Mariners finally found some offensive rhythm. That rhythm sounded a lot like Teoscar Hernandez and AJ Pollock both clobbering two homers a piece en route to a 11-2 Mariners win over the Angels.

The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is allocating $1.1 Million to fourteen organizations across the city to support arts and cultural organizations impacted by the pandemic and increase citywide recovery efforts. These lead organizations will sub-contract with neighborhood-based organizations and small businesses to carry out inclusive and creative activation projects and events that further the neighborhoods’ and city’s pandemic recovery process.

This summer the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) launches Spatial Justice through Street Art as its first project under Mayor Harrell’s exciting Many Hands Art Initiative. ARTS in partnership with the Seattle Office of Economic Develop is awarding $400,000 to fund 7 arts organizations to create street murals across the city that reflect our city-wide values of creativity and belonging through arts.

Has a migration begun for Black children to leave mainstream education and choose alternative methods to meet the educational needs that are not being met by the Seattle Public Schools? Is there a teacher shortage for teachers or color or are educators making different choices for children?

The Spectrum Dance Theater held their 40th-anniversary gala and celebration at MOHAI last week. This year’s gala at MOHAI featured a full night of dancing, performances, and brand-new audience experiences. It also marked the 20th year for Artistic Director Donald Byrd.

On Sunday, two vigils were held to celebrate the life of Elijah L. Lewis. The first was at Black Dot Seattle, where Community members gathered to remember the activist, entrepreneur and community leader whose life was tragically cut short on Saturday afternoon at just 23 years old.

The Seattle Mariners would drop their fourth straight game, opening up their three-game slate with the Los Angeles Angels the wrong way, thanks again due to defensive issues, pitching woes, and a lack of sustained offensive attack. There are issues a plenty, but the Mariners aren’t panicking just yet.

Playing the first game of the final two weeks of the NHL regular season, and first of two in three days against the Coyotes, the Seattle Kraken established utter domination with an 8-1 victory. Seattle’s four goals in the third period ultimately put things away, and the Kraken magic point number to clinch a playoff berth now sits at 6.

In the third game of the series, the Seattle Mariners bats remained frosty as the team fell 2-0 to the Cleveland Guardians. Mariners starter Logan Gilbert was solid, but his offense couldn't provide him with any run support.

With time ticking down on the regular season, the Seattle Kraken failed to overthrow the Los Angeles Kings in their final matchup. A tight game throughout the contest, Seattle failed to find the net until the third period, and by that time the Kings had already tallied two.
