A Promise Fulfilled: Rainier Playfield’s State-of-the-Art Transformation Unveiled for South Seattle Youth

In July 2023 during All-Star Week, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, and the Mariners made a promise to the youth of South Seattle: to transform Rainier Playfield into a state-of-the-art facility.

This commitment, intended to be the lasting legacy of the All-Star festivities, was fulfilled in 2024 with the unveiling of the brand-new field. The revitalized Playfield now boasts turf and adjustable base settings, accommodating different age groups and both baseball and softball players. The celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony featured a parade of local Little League teams and special appearances by beloved figures like the Mariners Moose and baseball legend Edgar Martinez.

The project holds profound significance for the community, especially for those involved with Back2Besa. The field had previously fallen into disrepair, reaching a point where games had to be canceled due to poor conditions, particularly after rainfall.

With this transformation, the youth of South Seattle are no longer hindered by inadequate facilities; instead, they have a world-class venue where they can hone their skills, build friendships, and create lasting memories. Community figure Besa Gordon stood front and center during the unveiling, marking the fulfillment of a promise intertwined with the community's history.

Catch Back2Besa every Saturday at 10:30 p.m. on FOX 13 Seattle and Sundays at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on FOX 13+. Viewers can also stream episodes anytime on the FOX Local app.
