Forever Etched in Our Hearts: Remembering Central District Community Leader D’Vonne Pickett Jr.

Today, we honor a giant in Seattle’s Central District and beyond: D’Vonne Pickett Jr.

Today marks the fourth anniversary of his tragic passing. We look back to when the Central District gathered in unity and remembrance to honor D’Vonne’s legacy as a cherished community leader, entrepreneur, and family man whose devotion to his neighborhood forever transformed Seattle. On February 22, 2023, City of Seattle officials came together at the corner of 21st Avenue and East Union Street to officially dedicate D’Vonne Pickett Jr. Way.

“I don’t know if it’s really understood how big it is to be a child of your city,” D’Vonne’s wife Keanna Pickett said at the gathering. “To live your life through purpose to give back. We have three children and every morning I see D’Vonne in their face.”

The unveiling celebrated both D’Vonne’s life and his tireless advocacy. The legislation to rename part of E. Union Street was sponsored by Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda and the Seattle City Council passed it unanimously; the street renaming represented a call to action against gun violence and a pledge to carry forward his mission of service. Surrounded by D’Vonne’s mother Nicky Chappell, Mayor Bruce Harrell, and other loved ones speaking to his impactful role as a father, husband, and mentor, the dedication highlighted how deeply D’Vonne’s influence resonated across generations and throughout the city.

"My journey is to keep my baby's name alive wherever I can do that, and so that's my fight,” Chappell said at the gathering.

Through this historic sign and the ongoing commitment of those inspired by his leadership, D’Vonne Pickett Jr.’s legacy will continue to guide, inspire, and unite the Central District for years to come.

Our hero is forever etched in our hearts. Long live D’Vonne Pickett Jr.

Special thanks to Winfield Ezell Jr. Francisco Lopez, and Brady McAttee.
