Indigiqueer Festival: Connecting Land, People, and Sea at the Waterfront

The Indigiqueer Festival brought together Two-Spirit individuals from across Seattle and the greater area to celebrate their identities at the waterfront last June. The event highlighted the inseparable connection between Indigenous heritage and queerness, emphasizing that this powerful combination has been a part of the land and its people for eons. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in various workshops led by queer Indigenous people, learning traditional crafts such as weaving and drum painting. The main stage featured traditional art and drum groups, culminating in a lively drag show to cap off Pride Month.

Having the festival and related businesses on the Waterfront holds deep significance for the Indigenous community, representing hope, vision, and a tangible reality, according to Elisa Spears Hampton of Matriarch Art Gallery. Indigiqueer proved the importance of intentional joy and celebration, especially for communities that have historically and currently faced exclusion. This inclusive approach helped establish the Waterfront as a welcoming space for everyone, boasting 273 programs designed to encourage repeat visits and curiosity about  Seattle arts, culture, and recreation.

In essence, Indigiqueer provided a vital opportunity for connection between people and the land's original inhabitants, fostering consistent joy and love that is integral to the Puget Sound. This celebration of Black joy, Indigenous joy, and Indigiqueer joy is a powerful statement, aiming to create spaces that amplify the brilliance and greatness within these communities for Seattle and the world to see.
