Songs of Black Folk: A Powerful Legacy of Rhythm and Resistance

Last Juneteenth weekend, Seattle’s celebrated cultural tradition, Songs of Black Folk, returned to the stage at McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center. On Sunday, June 22, 2025, the production offered a fusion of fine arts, music, and powerful storytelling that paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Black musical expression.

The 2025 evolution of Songs of Black Folk was an immersive cultural experience that honored the musical traditions born on the African continent and carried through history to become the bedrock of global sound. Through a seamless weaving of genres, from Negro Spirituals and blues to jazz, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and spoken word, the performance reflects the profound resilience, depth, and creativity inherent in Black life and expression.

At its core, the show acts as a tribute to the ways Black communities have transformed struggle into sound, serving as a vital reminder that resistance has always had a rhythm. By connecting the past to the present through performances from nationally recognized and locally loved artists, the production invites audiences into a shared celebration of freedom, cultural pride, and Black excellence.
