One Seattle Day of Remembrance Highlights Community Work to End Violence
In September 2023, community members gathered for the City of Seattle and the Alliance for Gun Responsibility's One Seattle Day of Remembrance event at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill. The day was a somber and reflective occasion, which featured a memorial and highlighted the work that various organizations and individuals are doing throughout the community to end the epidemic of violence.
The evening included spoken word performances, prayer, speeches, and a powerful panel featuring survivors, family members, and organizers. The Day With Trae host Trae Holiday interviewed Audrey Jackson, the mother of late rapper Pop Smoke, who shared a profound message of resilience and remembrance. Jackson asked the crowd to consider, “What are we doing with the energy and the light, and with the joy of knowing that we gave birth and had that for a little bit,” and offered a perspective on strength, noting, “You don’t owe anybody stoic - it’s going to be okay and things like this give us permission to be alright with where we are right now.”
Speakers on the panel used the platform to discuss tangible actions that can be taken to end gun violence and work toward community-based goals. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell emphasized that the day serves as a reminder of the work that remains, and emphasizing the impact of seeing the faces of the families of those killed. “We’re bringing community together to honor those we’ve lost,” in an effort to uplift the ongoing fight against violence,” Harrell said.
