Besa Gordon Spotlights EYFO and DEEL Resources on Good Day Seattle
Besa Gordon joined Good Day Seattle this morning to discuss the Empowering Youth Firearm Outreach Program (EYFO), a partnership between the University of Washington and the Seattle Police Department focused on safety and digital literacy for young people.
Gordon shared that a cohort of EYFO students visited her and the Converge team yesterday in the Black Media Matters Studio. Their visit was especially emotional as they navigated the tragic loss of their friend and fellow participant, Traveiah Houfmuse, who was killed near Rainier Beach High School just two weeks ago.
The conversation then shifted to the critical need for trauma support and mental health services for students impacted by the violence. Gordon highlighted that the Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) offers free resources at over 20 schools in the Seattle area, including Rainier Beach High School, Garfield High School, and Cleveland High School, making support easier to access right where students already are.
Through her partnership with DEEL, Gordon recently interviewed Pray Shiferaw, a behavioral health coordinator at the Rainier Beach High School teen health clinic. During their conversation, Shiferaw emphasized that seeking care is a sign of strength, hoping to provide a non-judgmental space for students.
Reflecting on the fear felt by students, Gordon spoke directly to them, acknowledging that the current environment is "not fair." She pledged to continue using her platform to amplify youth voices, ensuring they feel seen and supported: "I can't fix the world, but I can definitely make sure that our youth are heard."
