After 77 years of service, the iconic Mutual Fish Company in Seattle’s Rainier Valley officially closed its doors in September 2023. Founded in 1946 at 14th and Yesler, the family-owned business became a community institution, serving generations of residents, local restaurants, and renowned chefs across the city. The closure marked the end of an era for a staple that helped shape the local culinary fabric.
Besa Gordon from Back2Besa partnered with Cynthia Brothers of Vanishing Seattle to document the emotional final day, capturing a scene filled with tears, smiles, and heartfelt goodbyes. The shop was flooded with long-time customers making one last visit to honor the legacy of the market, sharing stories of decades-long traditions, including annual New Year’s shopping trips. Co-owner Harry Yoshimura expressed deep gratitude for the loyalty shown by the community over the years.
Former Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, who frequented the shop as a child, noted that the closure serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing the businesses that build community. While the market's physical presence has come to an end, its legacy remains, and the community has expressed warm wishes for Harry Yoshimura and his family as they transition into retirement.
