Island Soul: Where Food Meets Family, Legacy, and Love
If you’ve ever been to Island Soul in Columbia City, you know it’s more than a restaurant—it’s a whole experience. Owner Theo Martin built Island Soul as a tribute to his family, especially his father Jeff, who ran a popular BBQ spot called Judkins Barbecue in the ‘70s, and his foster mother Lula, who taught him that food is healing.
Theo didn’t always know he’d run a restaurant. But when his father got sick, he stepped in—and found his calling. “It was about not letting the legacy fade,” he shared. That love turned into Island Soul, where Caribbean flavors meet Southern soul in a space that feels like a family cookout.
Theo’s mom, a vegetarian and community caregiver, inspired not just the food but the spirit. She fed the homeless, hosted church dinners, and ran a daycare. “She was always serving,” Theo said. “I do that now through my work.”
Island Soul opened in Columbia City in 2003—when the neighborhood was still in transition. But Theo brought his family-centered vision, and the community responded. “You walk in, and you feel like you're somewhere else,” he said. “You leave everything outside.”
Support from Seattle’s Office of Economic Development helped the business survive the pandemic, including funds for outdoor seating and a safer interior layout. “We actually grew during COVID,” Theo shared.
And through it all, his favorite part? “My whole family is involved. Friends, neighbors, people I’ve seen grow up—it’s all love. This is my country club.”
For those dreaming of their own restaurant, Theo’s advice is simple: “Be authentic. Give people what they want with love, quality, and service.”
The Island Soul journey is still going—and the flavor, like the legacy, keeps growing.

Besa Gordon Highlights AI Innovation and Inclusion on FOX 13 Seattle's Good Day Seattle
Besa Gordon made her weekly guest appearance on Good Day Seattle to spotlight the highly anticipated grand opening of Ai House, a new Ai startup incubator located at Pier 70 on the Seattle Waterfront.
During her segment with host Bill Wixey, Besa described Ai House as more than just a tech hub—it’s a space built with purpose. Backed by the City of Seattle Office of Economic Development, Washington State Department of Commerce, Ada Developers Academy, and AI2 Incubator, the Ai House was designed to foster innovation and bring diversity to the forefront of artificial intelligence.
Besa highlighted the work of Ada Developers Academy, which has helped more than 1,300 women in the Seattle area launch successful careers in tech and AI. She also introduced viewers to Yoodli.Ai, an AI-powered communication tool that helps people improve their public speaking and reduce filler words—something Besa personally tested and found extremely helpful.
What stood out most in her appearance was the focus on inclusion. Besa pointed out how representation in AI isn’t just about fairness—it’s about making better, more usable technology for everyone. “We’ve all had that moment where a soap dispenser doesn’t recognize your hand… Well at least I have” she shared. “But it’s not because it didn’t want to work, It’s because someone who looks like me wasn’t part of the testing process.”
Her full coverage of the AI House grand opening will air on this weekend’s Back2Besa episode—Saturday at 10:30 p.m. on FOX 13 and Sunday at 10 a.m. on FOX 13+. The episode will also be available for streaming anytime on the FOX Local app.
For Besa, AI House represents a turning point in how Seattle embraces tech—with innovation, intention, and community at the center.

Celebrating Black Culture and Community: Rodney King and the CD Art Walk
Rodney King, an artist and owner of Kingspen LLC, is deeply invested in showcasing and preserving the rich history and culture of Seattle's Central District (CD). Through his art and involvement in the CD Art Walk, he aims to activate the community, highlight Black-owned businesses, and evoke nostalgic memories of a bygone era.
The CD Art Walk, held on the first Friday of every month, features art installations throughout the Central District. Rodney King's "community series" at Made Space on East Union focuses on everyday moments and experiences within the Black community, such as scenes from barber shops, community events, and childhood memories. His art is described as "Soul art," meant to stir emotions and connect viewers to shared experiences, like the scent of Blue Magic hair grease on Easter Sunday.
Rodney King emphasizes the importance of this type of art in representing Black culture and history. He wants his work to remind people of the CD's past, a time when local businesses like Larry's, Max, BJs, and Gay's Bakery thrived. He fears the "vanishing" of the CD's identity and uses his art to recreate scenes from the mid-to-late 80s, hoping to spark recognition and remembrance in viewers.
The CD Art Walk is designed to be accessible and engaging. A free "party bus" provided by G Perez transports attendees to different art installations, allowing them to enjoy music and explore the area without having to walk the entire route. This initiative encourages participation and supports the various businesses and artists involved.
Rodney King's biggest inspiration is Black culture itself. He seeks to celebrate all aspects of Black achievement, from music and sports to academics and everyday life. Through his art and involvement in the CD Art Walk, he strives to create a lasting testament to the vibrant and resilient Black community of Seattle's Central District. He also has plans for future shows in other locations, including Belltown and the Tacoma Armory, with the aim of continuing to share his art and celebrate Black culture. You can learn more about Rodney on his Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/_kingspen/?hl=en and more about the CD Art Walk at https://www.instagram.com/cdartwalk/?hl=en -
